What is Probate Court?
In Georgia as in many states there are specialized courts which handle matters pertaining to the distribution of a person’s assets and liabilities after they have died. These courts are often referred to as Probate Courts.
Why do I need to contact Probate Court?
If a family member has passed away the first step you should take in handling their affairs is to contact the Probate Court in the County where the decedent lived. The clerk of the Probate Court will be able to guide you through the process of filing the paperwork that is required to transfer any of the decedent’s assetts. If the decedent had a will the will must be filed with the court as well. It is important to file all the necessary paperwork and complete the process so the decedent’s assets (real estate, cars, bank accounts, stocks, etc.) are passed along to the intended heirs.
